Beading 101 - The Mala Meditation Necklace

Ever wanted to learn the A-B-C's of jewelry-making, but don't quite know where to start?  How about creating a well-made knotted necklace that is both functional and beautiful? No fears, my friends. We have you covered in our Intro to Beading workshop where we'll make a Mala Meditation necklace. 

In this class, you will learn stringing and finishing techniques used by professional jewelry makers to ensure high-quality, and most importantly, long-lasting beaded designs. Instead of beading on a flexible wire, you will learn the ancient process of knotting beads for this workshop.  A little silk cording, a pair of pliers, and a little time, and you'll have a necklace you're going to absolutely love to wear. 

You will start the process by choosing 108 gemstone beads with which you will create your Mala necklace.  For fun, we'll then go into creating a tassel by hand (no fears... we'll also have plenty of colorful tassels on-hand from which you can choose to create your final necklace). After a little tassel fun, we'll then take the remainder of the time to bead our necklaces.  

Not familiar with the Mala bead necklace?  Aside from being a fashion staple for many women, they are also known as Yoga Beads or Japa Mala. Mala necklaces are used to enhance ones spiritual connectivity and is often used during meditation or mantra recitation in yoga.  We'll have a wide variety of gemstones on hand with a handout that goes over what each stone means. While you can choose a singular stone,  you can also create a Mala with a variety of beads. You'll be able to choose from a wide variety including obsidian, agates, jaspers, quartz, chalcedony and much more.  The beauty is the choice is yours. 

By the end of the class, you'll have plenty of practice, and a lovely handmade necklace to wear home.

For the course, we will provide all tools and supplies.  Our beads will be 6mm - 8mm in size. If you have special beads you'd like to use, be sure to bring them with you for your creation. 

Each class is a 2 - 2.5 hour session
